Three new pick-up sites!

Tamarindo Recycles is happy to announce three new sets of barrels for community drop-off of recyclable material. All three of theses sites are located along the "Pasatiempo" road. These barrels are made of white heavy plastic and have our stickers on them. The first set is near the corner across the street from the Oveja Negra hostel. The second set of barrels, farther up the road, is in front of the empty lot across the street from La Botella de Leche. The third set is across the street from the gym on the corner near Villas Mariposa.

Please help us to keep the sites clean by bringing your material in CLOSED bags. Please bring an empty bag with you when you drop off your material and donate 5 minutes of your time to collecting loose bottles etc. from the site you use.

Remember: NO WET CARDBOARD. If it looks like rain, keep your cardboard at home.

Each Tuesday morning the Municipalidad de Santa Cruz will drive through Tamarindo and Langosta picking up recyclable material at the 10 sites with collection barrels and all other businesses who have contacted us to request pick-up.

This Friday, October 30, 2009 a truck from the Municipalidad de Santa Cruz will come to Tamarindo to collect recyclable material from the FIVE SITES where Tamarindo Recycles has barrels to collect material. Please bring your separated #1 and #2 plastics, your aluminum beverage cans and your glass to these spots and leave your closed bags piled neatly. They will also accept rinsed tetra-paks.

Tamarindo businesses:

If you are not already on our route and you have a large volume of recyclable material for which you need pick-up, please reply to this e-mail stating the type of material that you have, the name of your Business and where you are located. We will contact you if the Municipality can come to your Business.

También aceptarán tetra-paks enjugados.

The rainy days of October didn’t stop Tamarindo Recycles from collecting nearly 1.5 tons of material this past Saturday. Over one-hundred individuals from Tamarindo and the surrounding communities fought the potholes in the roads to bring their recyclable material to recycling day. We had a record number of volunteers from the community, Las Baulas National Marine Park, the Langosta National Wildlife Refuge and Country Day School. This recycling day also marked the first collaboration with the Municipality of Santa Cruz who sent four workers, including Engineer Berny Leal who is in charge of waste management. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a productive relationship between the committee and the Municipality.

"Trashion Fashion" Event

In order to raise money to build a collection site and raise awareness among Tamarindo residents, the Tamarindo Recycles committee is planning a recycling fashion show event entitled “Trashion Fashion.” The event is being co-organized by local designers Kata Kis, from Papaya con Leche, Petra Beuthner, of Uno Solo, and artists Jaguart.

The fashion show will feature original designs from the artists that are made from recycled material. Some designs will be extravagant and over the top, while others are items that anybody can use or wear.

The Trashion Fashion event will be held at Bar1 on September 11. Music is being done by Fabrice Vanegas. Bar1 will be donating a portion of the bar sales and additionally there will be a raffle and a cover charge benefiting the Tamarindo Recycles committee.

The Most Successful Recycling Day Yet!

Thanks to all of you who participated in the last recycling day and made it the most successful one yet! More than 120 people brought their recycables to us on Saturday. We recycled 2,444 kilos (5,338 lbs) of material, bringing the grand total of material recycled to approximately 7.5 metric tons (16,540 lbs).

We would like to thank all volunteers, as well as Cafe-Cafe, Rancho Villa Real, Tamarindo Preserve, Witch's Rock Surf Camp, Pixel, Pro Mejoras de Tamarindo, RPM and the Association of Santa Rosa for their invaluable support.
